When news of Kobe Bryant and his daughter GiGi’s helicopter crash broke, people started sharing their memories of meeting and knowing him. SportsCenter’s Ellen Duncan’s memory went viral and started a movement now known as #GirlDad.
The memory she shared was about meeting him and asking him for advice on raising girls, considering he had three at the time. He told her that his wife Vanessa really wanted to try again for a boy and Duncan then asked him, “But what if it was another girl?” To that Bryant said, ” I would have five more girls if I could. I’m a girl dad.”

This episode of Minority Report Podcast features one of adops’ own, Dennis Colon, SVP Ad Ops & Strategy at CBSi, speaking with hosts Erik Requidan, Founder & CEO Tradecraft Advisory and Kerel Cooper, SVP Global Marketing, LiveIntent about what it means to be a #GirlDad.
Colon, Requidan and Cooper are all fathers of girls, so the conversation went really deep
Here are some highlights of what Colon shared in this episode:
My girls have grown up in this digital age. They don’t know what it is to not have access they way they have access. And what better time than to raise them up and acknowledge everything that women do in this world consistently on a day-to-day basis. You know we focus on business and all those achievements—that are super important. But the women and girls around you are such a vital piece of that. It’s always exciting to hear my daughters overcome something.
I feel like my career skyrocketed becuase I was in a situation where I had to take care of a life. If that doesn’t change you then I don’t know when. And add on the fact that it’s a girl—and I come from a family of many strong women—so I always felt like I understood. But having my baby girls—it definitely changed my perspective.
Something my wife put in front of me, she said, “Acknowledge their feelings.” It’s a very important thing to do in life for everyone, but especially your children. The other piece is there is no playbook, you’ve gotta treat each girl individually and understand how they operate and address them based on that. That’s one of the most important things outside of listening and acknowledging their feelings.

About the Minority Report Podcast
When Erik Requidan, Founder & CEO Tradecraft Advisory called Kerel Cooper, SVP Global Marketing, LiveIntent back in April 2018 and told him he had an idea for creating a podcast where underrepresented groups within marketing and advertising could tell their own personal story, Cooper said he loved it. And so, the two partnered and launched the Minority Report Podcast.
The Minority Report highlights people of color, women & LGBTQ community within media, ad tech, advertising and marketing.
