Hi All -- I"ve been applying to jobs here on AdMonsters and other places, trying to switch into an Ad Ops role. I have about 5+ years in digital media, including a year in which I oversaw ad ops for a major bank.
I read almost everything I can find about ad ops, and I'm really excited about pursuing a career in ad ops. The problem is, how do I get in? Can someone suggest a strategy?

Hi I am from India, worked in an MNC BPO for an US publisher for 2.5 years, worked in online video advertising company branch in India for 2+ years and now working in mobile advertising company. Can I get a job in US or UK for AD-OPS as I love my carrier I don't want to move to other domain. Any one willing to give a job in Adops in US/canada/UK? I am ready to attend the telephonic or video conferencing interview. Any one ready to provide me a offer letter in UK/US/Canada I can arrange for work permit and can join UK in 30days, US in 45 days and Canada in 30 days. This is the time frame to get the work permit once I get the offer letter issued by the company. Its sound strange but, think from my point of view want to gain more knowledge in ADOPS and ready to learn new things. Given an chance one day or the other I will be a domain expert in Adops.
Thanks,
Venk
I've found that the majority of ad operations positions are in areas such as NY, San Diego, Australia & London. You're in NY so you may want to contact DFP or OAS and ask them if they know of any local companies that are going through a transition. They're more likely to hear about these things than anyone. I've built great relationships with my ad serving guys and they have shared this kind of stuff with me in the past.
Good Luck.
All I can say is to continue to try. Me personally i am in the same boat except my background has been in print for the last 18 years. Since print is very hard to find I have been using my transferable skills to make the switch into digital.
I'm in the NY area as well, and have been looking and goiing on interviews for Ad Ops. hoping someone will take the chance on me. Best bet, don't give up. I feel it's timing.

Dex Ter, what city are you located in?
Hi Raj, I'm in New York.
Hi Rainey, thanks for the advice. I've been careful to always highlight my attention to detail (I've worked on deadline as an online editor for one of the leading news websites.) My technical skills are also solid with knowledge of HTML, JavaScript and Flash, plus I'm familiar with DoubleClick for Publishers, Atlas and Web analytics (Omniture). From the job specs I've read for Ad Ops roles, my skills would be transferable, and I'm sure I would be up to speed in a matter of days.
Ad trafficking, for instance, strikes me as not quite different from content editing, except that you use an ad server instead of a CMS and interface more with sales. In my case, I've also worked closely with the digital ad sales team at one of my old jobs. So I seem to tick all the boxes, but still have found it difficult to land an Ad Ops role. Yet I'm reading on here people saying that they're having trouble recruiting ops staff. Weird...
Best bet is to keep on trying...it's all about finding that right fit...it's out there! Cast your net wide...and really make your resume sing with praises on your detail orientedness, your work ethic, your ability to do technical things and find a way to work in your ability to deal with salespeople! :-)
good luck!
Rainey
