Pixel tracking for publishers

We are a publisher looking to track our own content as it is consumed by third party sites via an API. To do so I need to include a tracking pixel along with the content title. I've been toying with serving a pixel in the non-javascript environment code format from our DFP SB Account. Cons of this are it's not really a supported use of DFP, and we're are talking about a lot of content pieces, so there'd be an incredible amount of management on the DFP side

Other possible solutions: Get a DFA account to generate and track the pixels. Or, Track using an image load event in Google analytics.

Anyone have any suggestions/solutions for pixel tracking in this manner?
